In children, Vit- D deficiency is manifested as Rickets. It is a disease of toddlers where their bones are under-mineralized because of poor absorption of calcium which is a result of deficiency of Vitamin D. When these children begin to walk, the long bones of the legs are deformed which leads to bow-legs or knock knees.
The more serious repercussion of this is the collapsing of the ribcage and the deformities of the bones of the pelvis.
These problems can also be seen in adolescents. The reason for that is that during the growth phase in adolescents, there is a high demand for Ca for the formation of new bones but Vit-D deficiency causes insufficient Ca absorption.
Osteomalacia can be called a condition of rickets for adults. This happens as a result of demineralization of bones. Women population who do not get sufficient exposure to sunlight and have had multiple pregnancies are at a higher risk of getting detected with Osteomalacia. This is so because pregnancy causes a strain on the calcium reserves in the system. A fetus tends to acquire Ca for growth from the mother’s bones if proper intake is not available.

2.Bone and Back Pain: Deficiency can cause bone pain and aches, especially in the back and joints.
