 स्थविर महाकाश्यप की कथा ||28|| 

संदर्भ: श्रावस्ती नगर के जेतवन में वर्षावास करते समय, तथागत ने अपने परम शिष्यों में से एक स्थविर महाकाश्यप* के विषय में कहा -एक समय वे राजगृह (राजगीर, बिहार) के पास पिप्पली गुहा में रहकर साधना किया करते थे।एक दिन उनके मन में आया कि क्‍यों न अपनी अलौकिक दृष्टि से अपने और दूसरे लोगों के पूर्वजन्मों को देखा जाए। इसलिए उन्होंने भिक्षा चारिका समाप्त होने पर भोजन कर्म से निवृत्त होने के बाद अपना ध्यान प्रकाश बढ़ाकर अपनी दिव्यदृष्टि द्वारा जरा देखूँ कि मेरा शिष्य महाकाश्यप इस समय क्‍या कर रहा है अपने दिव्य-नेत्रों से उन्होंने देखा कि वह तो पिप्पली गुफा में बैठा प्राणियों के जन्म-मरण जानने की चेष्टा करते हुए अपना समय गँवा रहा है।तब तथागत बुद्ध अपने ऋद्धि के प्रभाव से उसके ध्यान में प्रकट हुए मानों वे उसके सामने बैठे हुए हों और बोले, “आयुष्मान्‌ काश्यप! प्राणियों के जन्म और मरण की श्रृंखला अनन्त है और अपनी बुद्धि से तुम उन्हें गिन नहीं पाओगे। अतः तुम्हारे लिए उचित नहीं है कि तुम उन्हें गिनने में लगे रहो। गणना करना तुम्हारा काम नहीं है। प्राणियों के जगत में आने-जाने का हिसाब- किताब रखना मात्र बुद्धों का काम है, तुम्हारा नहीं।” इसके बाद तथागत ने यह गाथा कही (शेष कल की पोस्ट में)

While residing at the Jétavana Monastery, (Shravasti) the Bud- dha spoke this verse, with reference to Monk Mahakassapa.

Once while the Buddha was in residing at the Pipphali Cave, (Rajgir, Bihar), he made his round for alms and after he had returned from his round for alms and had eaten his breakfast, he sat down and using psychic powers surveyed with his Supernormal Vision all living beings, both heedless and heedful, in the water, on the earth, in the mountains, and elsewhere, both coming into existence and passing out of existence, Then, the Buddha, pondered within himself, “With, what is my son Kassapa occupied today?” Straightaway he became aware of the following, “He is contemplating the rising and falling of living beings.” He sent forth a radiant image of himself, as it were, sitting down face to face with Kassapa. He said, dear son kassapa “Knowledge of the rising and falling of living beings cannot be fully understood. Living beings pass from one existence to another and obtain a new conception in a mother’s womb without the knowledge of mother or father, and this knowledge cannot be fully understood. To know them is beyond Kassapa’s range, as your range is very slight. It comes within the range of the Buddhas alone, to know and to see in their totality, the rising and falling of living beings.” He then narrated the following story to Bikhkhus.
